Duration: 6 weeks
Collaboration: Worked with three other HCI grad students.
Role: UX/UI Designer responsible for UX research, ideation, wireframing, visual design, user testing, low fidelity and high fidelity prototype.
Tools: Figma
Outcome: Designed and prototyped an online learning platform that enables people to learn a variety of skills on their own time with little to no cost.
Design Challenge Brief
Introduction The goal of our application is to allow users to learn a variety of skills on their own time. The website will allow users to take relevant virtual courses taught by professionals to help in their learning journey. EduOn offers skill retention through knowledge checks, affordability and accessibility, flexible scheduling of quizzes, and is a global learning platform that breaks the geographical limitations of traditional learning platforms, connecting users globally.
Task Design a website that gives users globally the ability to learn virtual relevant courses on their own time.
UX Methods Primary research, user flows, wireframing, prototyping, brainstorming, and usability testing.
Evaluation based on design thinking, interaction design, UX research.
DESIGN THINKING PROCESS
Context
Our domain space is the education/learning space. We are trying to help make the learning and education space more easily accessible to everyone worldwide. We want to allow users to learn a variety of skills on their own time. The website will allow users to take relevant virtual courses taught by professionals to help in their learning journey.
Problem
We found existing platforms often were not engaging or interactive enough for users to retain information or finish their courses. So we wanted to fix that.
Solution
Design a global learning platform that is cost-friendly, easy to use, and includes skills retention with knowledge checks and flexible scheduling of quizzes.
How Might We…
Create a global learning platform that is cost-friendly and easy to use
Quick and Dirty Usability Test
As a group we all contributed to conducting a quick and dirty usability test where we found three potential users and had them walkthrough our prototype to find potential usability issues.
Tasks Completed By Participants
This is the first time you’re using EduOn and you don’t have an account. How do you sign up for an account and go to your profile to edit more information?
You’ve just finished your Calculus 2 course on EduOn. You believe that it’s time to learn more about Linear Algebra. Where do I go to find and purchase a course about Linear Algebra?
You’ve completed around 40% of your JavaScript: Beginner course. You’ve been notified that your second knowledge check is ready to begin. Where do you go to perform the knowledge check for the course?
You’ve been talking to your classmate Giannis through EduOn. You’ve been studying with him, along with learning some new words from the Greek language. Where could you go to message Giannis?
While watching your lecture videos, your professor mentions that they will be holding a virtual exam study session for those who require assistance on EduOn. You want to attend for some extra practice. Where can you go to attend the virtual session on the website?
For your C: Intermediate course, you’ve received feedback on one of your assignments from the teaching assistant that you’re not completely understanding. To get a better idea, you want to message him privately and ask them about it. Where can you go to send a message to the teaching assistant?
You want to look for a new course to register for, however, you feel unsure what to pick. You would like to see what the website suggests you should take based on your previous courses. Where can you go to view the courses suggested for you?
Key Takeaways
Both in terms of averages and individual times, participants spent significantly more time on Tasks 2, 3, 4, and 8 compared to the other four tasks.
A similar trend was reflected in the number of clicks needed to complete Tasks 3, 4, 7 and 8, where the users greatly exceeded the optimal number of clicks from the user profile to reach the correct endpoint.
The participants also needed assistance from the administrator to complete Tasks 2, 3, 4, and 7, where Participant 1 required assistance on Tasks 3, 4, and 7, Participant 2 required assistance on Tasks 2 and 4, and Participant 3 required assistance on Tasks 3 and 7. This shows tasks 2, 3, 4 and 7 presented more of a challenge for the participants.
DESIGN GOALS
Design and Prototype
We utilized Figma to create, prototype, and conduct usability tests for this global learning platform. Our goal was to design a clean and minimal website that is affordable and accessible. Where users could easily learn new academic material and be able to complete knowledge checks.
Low and High Fidelity Prototypes
